The famous story: “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, a special summary for Christmas. Come and find out here on my blog!
A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech.
A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past,
Present and Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.
The writer Charles Dickens was born to a middle-class family which got into financial difficulties as a result of the spendthrift nature of his father John.
John was later committed in a debtor’s prison. Dickens at age 12 was forced to pawn his book collection,
drop out of school and work in a factory. This change heavily affected her writing and vision of him.
By the end of 1842 Dickens was an established author, where celebrating the Christmas season had become increasingly popular during the Victorian era.
The Christmas tree had been introduced to Britain during the 18th century and its use was popularized by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Their practice has been copied in many homes across the country. At the beginning of the 19th century there had been a revival of interest in Christmas carols.
Dickens was interested in Christmas and his first short story on the subject was “Christmas Festivities“,
the story was later released as “A Christmas Dinner“, where all of Dickens’ early writings on Christmas influenced the story of A Christmas Carol.
