Cloud Strife – The Fragmented Hero of Final Fantasy VII
Cloud Strife is one of the most recognizable protagonists in gaming history, but his story is not that of a simple hero.
Born in the quiet mountain village of Nibelheim, Cloud grew up isolated, longing to be admired and respected like the great warriors of Shinra’s elite corps, SOLDIER. His admiration for Sephiroth, the legendary First Class, pushed him to leave his hometown and chase the dream of becoming a hero.
However, Cloud’s journey was never straightforward. He never actually succeeded in joining SOLDIER as he had hoped. Instead, he became an ordinary Shinra infantryman. His life took a drastic turn after a traumatic chain of events: Shinra’s cruel experiments infused his body with Mako energy and Jenova’s cells, leaving him permanently changed. In the aftermath, Cloud’s memories became unstable, his personality fractured. To cope, he unconsciously constructed a false identity — believing himself to be a SOLDIER First Class, like his idol Sephiroth.
This fragile sense of self defined much of Cloud’s story. Haunted by his failures and manipulated by Sephiroth, he struggled to discern reality from illusion. And yet, despite his shattered psyche, Cloud grew into a true leader. With the massive Buster Sword — once belonging to his fallen friend Zack Fair — Cloud rose to fight against Shinra’s corporate domination and Sephiroth’s plan to merge with the Planet and become a god.
Cloud’s strength lies not only in his skills as a warrior, enhanced by Materia and his unique physiology, but also in his gradual acceptance of who he really is. His journey is one of identity, redemption, and resilience. From a broken boy who lived in the shadow of others, he emerged as the reluctant yet enduring savior of his world.
Guts – The Black Swordsman of Berserk
If Cloud represents the fractured hero of modern fantasy, Guts embodies the raw, brutal essence of dark fantasy.
His story begins in tragedy: Guts was literally born from a corpse, found beneath the gallows where his mother’s lifeless body hung. Raised in a mercenary band, his childhood was one of constant abuse, violence, and survival. From his earliest years, his only companions were a sword and the will to keep breathing.
As he grew, Guts’ immense strength and unmatched combat ability earned him a fearsome reputation. But his life changed when he encountered Griffith, the charismatic leader of the Band of the Hawk. For the first time, Guts found something more than survival — camaraderie, loyalty, and a sense of belonging. He fought as Griffith’s right hand through countless battles, dreaming of a future shaped by their shared victories.
That dream was shattered in the most horrific way during the Eclipse, one of the most infamous events in manga history. To achieve his ambition of ruling a kingdom, Griffith sacrificed his comrades to the God Hand, ascending into the demonic form of Femto. Guts and Casca — the woman he loved — were branded as sacrifices, condemned to be hunted by demons for the rest of their lives.
Scarred, furious, and burning with vengeance, Guts took up the colossal Dragon Slayer, a sword so massive it seemed impossible for any man to wield. His life became a relentless march through darkness, slaying apostles, demons, and even challenging the gods themselves. The Berserker Armor, later forged to amplify his strength, allowed him to fight beyond human limits — but at the risk of consuming his mind and body entirely.
Unlike Cloud, who fights to rediscover himself and protect the world, Guts fights against fate itself. He is a man cursed, branded, and broken, yet unyielding. His story is one of eternal defiance: even when gods decree his death, Guts refuses to bow. He is the very definition of perseverance in a world built to crush him.
