Introduction

Across different anime universes, few characters embody the concept of divine judgment as strongly as Hades and Zamasu.

Though they originate from entirely separate worlds, Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball Super, both figures share a central narrative thread: a profound rejection of humanity. Their stories are not simply about power, but about ideology, purpose, and the belief that mortals have deviated from their rightful place in the cosmos.

This article explores their individual histories, motivations, and roles within their respective universes, highlighting how each arrived at the conclusion that humanity must be judged… and ultimately removed.

Hades – The Ancient Ruler of the Underworld

In Greek-inspired mythology adapted within Saint Seiya, Hades stands as one of the most ancient and powerful gods, ruling over the Underworld as the embodiment of death and darkness.

Unlike many antagonists driven by personal revenge or ambition, Hades represents a divine order that predates humanity itself. His perspective is shaped by a fundamental belief: the world belongs to the gods, and humans exist beneath them.

Throughout history, humanity has repeatedly challenged divine authority, and in Hades’ view, this defiance is not progress: it is corruption. Mortals wage wars, destroy their own kind, and disrupt the balance of the world. From his perspective, their existence is inherently flawed.

When Hades awakens in the modern era, his objective is not chaos for its own sake, but restoration. He seeks to reclaim the Earth and reestablish divine rule, bringing the world back under the control of the gods and ending human influence.

Despite his cold and distant nature, Hades is not portrayed as irrational. Instead, he is a sovereign entity acting according to a rigid, ancient philosophy, one that places divine order above all else.

Zamasu – The Fallen Kaioshin Who Chose Absolute Justice

In contrast, Zamasu begins his journey not as a supreme ruler, but as a young Kaioshin apprentice within the hierarchy of the gods in Dragon Ball Super.

Initially under the guidance of Gowasu, Zamasu is tasked with observing mortal civilizations. However, instead of admiration or curiosity, what he develops is growing resentment.

As he witnesses wars, violence, and the apparent misuse of the power granted to mortals, Zamasu becomes increasingly convinced that humanity is a failure of creation. Unlike Hades, whose disdain is rooted in hierarchy, Zamasu’s hatred is ideological, he believes that mortals are fundamentally incompatible with justice.

A pivotal moment occurs when Zamasu encounters Son Goku, a mortal whose strength rivals that of the gods. To Zamasu, this is proof that the natural order has been broken.

Rejecting his role as a protector of balance, Zamasu abandons his duties and pursues his own radical solution: the eradication of all mortals.

Through the use of the Super Dragon Balls, he swaps bodies with Goku, becoming Goku Black, and begins executing his plan across timelines. His actions escalate further as he merges into Fused Zamasu, a being that embodies his ideology in its most extreme form.

Unlike Hades, Zamasu does not seek to restore an ancient order, he aims to create a “perfect” universe by eliminating what he considers imperfections.

Divine Perspective vs Divine Fanaticism

The stories of Hades and Zamasu highlight two distinct interpretations of divine authority.

Hades represents a traditional divine ruler: distant, authoritative, and bound to a worldview where gods naturally stand above mortals. His actions stem from maintaining hierarchy and restoring what he perceives as the rightful balance.

Zamasu, on the other hand, represents a corruption of divine purpose. His ideology transforms from observation to judgment, and finally into fanaticism. He does not simply wish to rule over mortals, he believes their existence must be erased for the sake of universal justice.

Where Hades enforces order, Zamasu enforces ideology.

Legacy Within Their Worlds

Both characters leave a lasting impact on their respective universes.

Hades’ influence is tied to ancient conflicts between gods and humans, shaping the ongoing struggle between divine forces and warriors like the Saints. His presence reinforces the idea that the gods are always watching, and that humanity’s defiance comes with consequences.

Zamasu’s legacy is far more disruptive. His actions across timelines and universes introduce unprecedented threats, forcing even gods of destruction and time to intervene. His Zero Mortals Plan becomes one of the most extreme expressions of divine rebellion ever seen.

Conclusion

Though born in different worlds, Hades and Zamasu share a common narrative core: the belief that humanity is unworthy of existence. Yet their motivations diverge sharply, one upholds an ancient hierarchy, while the other seeks to impose a self-defined version of justice.

Their stories serve as reflections of power, belief, and the consequences of absolute certainty.

To understand these characters is to explore a fundamental question that lies at the heart of both myth and anime storytelling: What happens when those who are meant to judge the world… decide it must be destroyed?
